Howzit! June 11 2014

Welcome to Maisee!!!

This is my first blog post so I apologise in advance if it is a little rusty, but I'm sure we will get there eventually :) After so many months of planning, chatting with suppliers, and arguing with couriers, it feels great to be writing this and to finally see the launch of my website!

Oh yes, before I get into details and just in case you were wondering, "howzit" is a warm South African greeting, and not that random cricket term.

Don't worry, I won't go into the details of the origin of Maisee too much as you can read it under the "About Us" section on the main page. Basically I moved to the UK from Durban, South Africa in 2012 and during shopping trips on the high street and online, I came up with the idea of starting my own boutique store. I decided to sell items made in South Africa by smaller-scale entrepreneurs and community development projects in order to avoid cheap, mass-produced rubbish, while simultaneously supporting my fellow country-men and women, as well as the more rural communities who rely on their artistic skills for income.

I wanted fair-trade, ethically sourced (environmentally and socially) unique, good quality yet stylish and quirky items. When I first arrived in the UK, almost everyone I spoke to assumed that "African products" would be limited to ethnic wooden crafts and bead work. These crafts are beautiful and one-of-a-kind (and I have them in store, take a look!), but I also wanted to show the world that there is so much more South Africa has to offer. With 11 different languages and hence cultures, South Africa is not short on creativity.

Eventually the big dream is to bring you beautiful items handmade and ethically sourced from Africa and the rest of the world. But one step at a time! Starting with my home country :)

Anyway, take a look around at www.maisee.co.uk ! I trust that you will like what I have in store. Also, please feel free to contact me with any suggestions, and don't forget to review items that you purchase (*sigh* I know, I am useless at leaving reviews too but please take a second just to write yay or nay if you get a chance).

Cheers :)
